Glass V Weight
There’s a maximum of two 4oz cloth layers on the deck of all our boards – from short boards
through to Shane longboards – and still our glass jobs are renowned as stronger and more durable
than any other. Extensive testing has proven more glass adds mostly weight.
The trick is to only sand the filler, not half the glass job and most of the laps.
All our laps are ground before filler,so no protec spray is needed to cover exposed laps or sanding
swirl marks.
Our boards feature orbitally treated, sanded finishes - no protec.
Longboards may be ordered with this finish or the more traditional resin finish coat with high polish.
Boards up to 9’0” have one layer of 4oz on the bottom, while any over that length have a 6oz layer.
Customer requests outside of these specs can always be accommodated.
Carbon
Carbon tails are standard on Glider models and optional on all others. This almost totally eliminates
the area from the hard edge of the tail to just in front of the fins – the driving force of every
surfboard – from deteriorating. Carbon is
considerably stronger than standard glass in compression and 10 times stronger in sheer, so no bending
or damage can occur in this critical zone without exceptional circumstances.
Carbon is a must for the protection of highly sensitive tips as well.
Shaping
Every Shane surfboard is carefully designed on computer using the D.A.T.*program.
Each design is then exactly produced by our shaping machine, using the C.E.T.* program.
Already 95 per cent finished by this stage, we’ve eliminated the inaccuracies of excessive
hand-shaping and allowed shapers to spend all their time on the finest of fine-tuning.
Each board has its own code too, so you can have the exact same board over again or you
can tweak one or any number of details, while leaving other aspects of the board that are working well.
Volume
An asset little used in the past and made easily accessible by computer design.
If you know the volume or “carrying capacity” of your favourite board it helps immensely in selecting
others for your quiver. For example: A 6’2” x 18 1⁄2” x 2 1⁄4” displaces between 26 and 27 litres.
For the same volume in a Glyder you knock 4” off the shortboard length and the volume is the same,
making it a 5’10” x 19 3/8" x 2 3/16". When selecting a gun you should be thinking of an extra three
or four litres of volume to allow for the demand of bigger waves, making it a 7’0” x 18 x 2”,
or 30 litres of volume. Whatever you need, it’s a huge bonus to know the displacement or paddle power
of your boards.
